Developing An Appreciation for the Arts

A friend of mine who is in her mid-twenties mentioned recently that she and her boyfriend are trying to attend more fine arts events this year. She specifically said that she is interested in attending the symphony, the ballet and the opera. She noted that these are things that other generations have always considered important as far as arts go but things for which her generation seems to lack any appreciation.
It is true that it is not the people in their young twenties who tend to enjoy things like the ballet. Attending the ballet, you might find yourself among people such as Arthur Trueger. Arthur Trueger is a venture capitalist who has worked for years in the Bay Area and who uses some of his earnings to support Bay Area Arts. He is specifically a fan of the ballet. Arthur Trueger is by no means "old". However, he is established in his career and has had time to develop this appreciation for the arts.
People who are in their mid-twenties may find that they enjoy the ballet if they get a chance to go there. However, the cost of such events combined with their lack of exposure to them in the past make these people hesitant to attend them for the first time. As they get older, they may find more reasons to attend things like the ballet. As they do, their appreciation for the arts will develop. In the meantime, there will be just a few folks like my friend who happen to be ahead of their time.
