Many adults find themselves getting bored with life. The excitement of youth is gone. The busy activity of being in school is over. And they have settled into something of a humdrum existence. It’s not bad. It’s just … boring.

Unfortunately, this can cause more problems for people than just the feeling of being bored. When we get bored as adults, we often take it out on the people around us. We have affairs that hurt our spouses because we need to create excitement. We stop seeing our friends because we have nothing new to say.

In order to avoid these types of problems, it is important that we continue to develop interests that are completely new to us. This is one of the reasons that many people get into gardening. It’s not only something that takes up our time but it also provides a wealth of new opportunities for education.

Take, for example, orchid gardening. When you don’t know anything about orchids, you assume that all orchid flower care is the same. But as you start to plant different types of orchids, you rapidly realize that there are big differences between phalaenopsis care and cymbidium care and the care of other orchid types. No, maybe the specific type of orchid care isn’t particularly interesting. But learning about it can be exciting.

Whether it’s orchids or cars or sculptural art, immersing ourselves in the study of new topics helps to make life interesting again. We often tell kids that there’s no reason they should be bored when there’s so much out there to do. Perhaps many of us adults need to start taking our own advice.
